The painter Alfred Rethel's invitation proposed in 1842 is still followed today by hundred thousands of visitors every year. The Old Masters' Picture Gallery contains a splendid collection of paintings that dates back to the 16 th century. However, a large number of famous paintings were acquired during the reign of Augustus the Strong and his son Augustus III. It was Augustus III who bought the probably best-known painting of the gallery, Raphael's Sistine Madonna. Furthermore, you can look at important works of some of the most famous artists of the 16 th and 17 th century, such as Giorgione, Titian, Nicolas Poussin, Jan Vermeer, Peter Paul Rubens and Rembrandt. In addition, you will find the celebrated cityscapes of Canaletto. During your tour through the museum you will be presented with the great variety of the paintings on display and you will learn interesting facts about the artists and their works.
