Dessau

The town of the "Bauhaus"
UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996

This former princely residency and capital of the principality of Anhalt, has interesting sites from various eras. The 18th century English park with its visual axes, optical illusion and the Georgium Palace in its center, housing the Anhalt-Dessau painting collection are worth a visit. The birthtown of Kurt Weill offers besides various other cultural events the annual Kurt Weill Festival in March and the engineer Professor Hugo Junkers has constructed in Dessau the first full-metal passenger aero plane (the "F 13")in 1919.

However, the name Dessau is most bound up with the Bauhaus, the former school of architecture and design founded in Weimar in 1919 and established in Dessau in 1926. The directors` Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe revolutionary architectual ideas had a worldwide influence and are considered as pioneering examples of modern architecture in the early 20 th century.

Both, the Bauhaus school building and the "Masterhouses", homes to the Bauhaus professors Moholy-Nagy, Feininger, Muche, Schlemmer, Kandinsky and Klee are open to visitors.
